Hearing advisory services
Better Hearing Australia (Victoria) is the only service in Victoria that provides free, independent and professional information and advice on managing hearing loss. We can also provide information on other ear and hearing related concerns such as tinnitus. Tinnitus is a ringing or buzzing noise in one or both ears.
Better Hearing Australia (Victoria) is a non-profit organization funded by the state government Department of Human Services. We don’t charge for services or sell any products. We’re an advisory and information service that assists people in navigating their way through the maze of hearing services, hearing aids, hearing technology and various approaches to managing tinnitus and other ear problems.
Do you have hearing loss?
- Do you find it difficult to understand conversation in situations where there is background noise?
- Do you find it difficult to understand people unless they are facing or near you?
- Is listening to conversation in a group tiring?
- Do people complain you turn the TV or radio up too loud?
- Do you think people mumble so that you often have to ask them to repeat what they said?
If you answered ‘yes’ to one or more of these questions you may have some loss of hearing.
You’re not alone
You may sometimes feel you’re the only one battling with hearing loss and that others don’t understand the difficulties you face. Yet hearing loss is the second most prevalent health concern in Australia (second only to musculoskeletal disease) and affects between 3-4 million Australians across all age groups. In the over 60s age group, 50% of people will have enough hearing loss to make communication difficult.
Hearing loss is often accompanied by tinnitus though you can also have tinnitus without hearing loss. Approximately 20% of Australians have tinnitus.
